China's Yuppers and Nopers

This was our first meal in China. Fatty meat and vegetables and a few unidentifiable globs of who knows what...but guess what??? It's a YUPPER folks. Chinese food is yummy! If you don't eat anything that has a face you should be o.k. At least that is my motto.
You can eat like a King on $5 a day in Beijing!



O.K. the following pictures are all from a "grocery store". It was a really unique and cool experience. This "store" was right next to our hotel. In the store there were a bunch of vendors, some selling bread, some selling meat, some selling Chinese booze. There was a small section within the store that looked like a regular grocery store with toiletry items and what not.
We looked around, were amazed at what we saw...(and smelled) and we drove everyone crazy with our camera flashes.
Anyhow, let's get on with it shall we?

Here is an example of something I wouldn't eat unless maybe I was absolutely starving. These were alive and wiggling folks and it's like bulk food. "Hey honey, can you go to the store and buy some jumbo meal worms? Yeah the big ones...you know what I'm talking about, and make sure they are nice and fresh"

We decided to focus our energy on a section that looked like bulk candies. Both of us went crazy filling our bags with colorful enticing treats. In the end I think we spent a whole whopping dollar.

This is tuckahone cake. It's not cake, it's not even sweet. It's like a flavorless fruit leather wrapped in Styrofoam like rice. Mmmmm....... NOPER!

This looks like it could be good. All colorful and pretending to hide something sweet.

Spoofer! It was some weird semi-dried fruit...again ...Not sweet.

Same as tuckahone cake but with bird seed all over it. NOPE nope noper


Noper
These are all along the same line. I guess the Chinese love bland jelly stuff, or tart dried fruits. We were hard pressed to find anything sweet. It was a bit of a dissapointment

I'd have to say that this is the closest to being a yupper. Looks good right. They call it peach pastry...but it's just fruit leather without any sugar. All of it is the same ol' stuff.

This would have been good if it weren't a huge seed with a tiny bit of sticky fruit around it.

Well, this post is getting lengthy so I'll sign off for now. We have more Chinese Yuppers and Nopers and other funny experiences. I'll get around to sharing it someday.

Biggest NOPER ever!

Here we have fish fin, Chicken Feet and raw fish. Yupper? Noper? Yet to be determined.
NOPER!!

The first pot is boiled silk worms and the second pot is snails(or hermit crabs) in the shells

Andy was brave enough to eat one of these worms. They smelled like a hot musty out house and Andy said that it tasted pretty much the way it smelled and was the worst thing he has ever eaten. With that said, I decided not to try it as it would be pretty emabarrasing to throw up in front of the cooks.
Got some stuffed squid for you. We didn't try this one either...I think the silk worms threw us off our adventerous spirits for the night. So this could very well be a yupper....we don't know.

Can you guess what this is? I actually liked them and they are a YUPPER!
So of course this is a yupper. A $15 waffle to be exact. But it was worth every penny...let me tell you. Ahhh I would like to eat another one right now!

MORE YUPPERS AND NOPERS

These are awesome! Yuppers baby! I've decided that I love everything "Aloe". These sugar free "Jolly Rancher-like" candies are a guilt free pleasure.

Oh my goodness! Just looking at this picture makes me wanna gag! NOPER x 2! GROSS!
It's some kind of chemically manufactured totally synthetic juice with some kind of orange pulp floating around in it. This is a case of me falling for great marketing. I mean look at this...wouldn't you want to try it? Blah...it's totally disgusting....excuse me while I go yack!

Um...Andy might say Yuppers on these strange cookie/cracker sandwiches but I say NOPER! I think I like my Sesame flavor to be savory and not sweet.

AHHHHHH!

YUPPERS with two snaps around the world and BACK!

Ummm hmmm! I think I am addicted to these moon pie thingies. I think they are like 5,000 calories a piece and probably the reason why I have gained 5 pounds since moving to Korea. They are laced with some kind of Korean crack or something because I can't stop eating them. Funny thing is, is that I NEVER eat this kind of junk food back home in the USA. I know better....

Yuppers and Nopers: Part 2

Tomato candy is a surprising yupper! Andy and I agree. At first it taste like tomato sauce but if you can get past the initial first few seconds the flavors turn into a yummy grapey taste sensation. Cousin Ryan says this is a definate noper, but he spit it out before it got tastey.


I call these squid chips. At first I thought they were going to be a noper because they smell pretty bad. Then I ate one and surprisingly they tasted good...kind of sweet-like so I thought it might be a yupper, but after it is swallowed it has a completely different fishy aftertaste which definately makes it a noper. I ate three and they gave me a stomache ache. I think Andy likes them but he only ate a couple so I am going to stand by NOPER.


Mushroom Juice? Another surprising yupper. It tastes sweet and not unpleasant....definately an indefineable flavor.


YUPPERS! Chocolate...come on?? Of course it's a yupper on all accounts.


Andy's pick. We didn't know what these were and that is kind of the point of yuppers and nopers. He found out that they are cough drops and I think he was dissapointed and put them in the nopers category. I tried one today and since I was expecting a cough drop I thought they were pretty deed'n good.....for a cough drop. So I says "Yupper".


Oh yes! Carbonated milk my friends and guess what? It's a huge YUPPER! This is called ambosa and it tastes like a dreamsicle. Very tasty...if you can get past the thought of carbonated milk.
